Propiverine is a drug which is used as an anticholinergic and antispasmodic.

Use

Propiverine belongs to the group of neurotropic - musculotropic antispasmodics. It is therefore used in urology at ( urge ) incontinence and increased urinary frequency.

Operation

Propiverine has a two -fold effect:

  • Anticholinergic activity, that is, a competitive inhibitory effect on acetylcholine -mediated neurotransmission at the muscarinic receptor, such as atropine ( neurotropic action ) and
  • A direct antispasmodic effect on smooth muscle, such as papaverine, which is due to the calcium channels of the L-type in the muscle cells of the smooth muscle by inhibiting calcium influx ( musculotropic effect).

Pharmacokinetics

Due to its in comparison to the other neurotropic antispasmodics musculotropic long half - life of 14 to 20 hours a twice daily administration is sufficient.

Side effects

In the application, it may fatigue, disturbances of the gastrointestinal functions, dry mouth, low blood pressure with dizziness symptoms and at high doses to decrease the sweat glands ( heat build-up, skin redness ) may occur.
