Propriano

Propriano ( Corsican Prupià ) is a commune and port city on the Mediterranean island of Corsica and is located on the south west coast between the capital Ajaccio and Bonifacio. Just south of the town flows into the river Rizzanese into the sea.

The lively seaside town has 3509 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011). The port of Propriano offers year-round ship to Toulon, Marseille, Genoa and Porto Torres in Sardinia.

History

The place is probably identical with the ancient Pauca. In the 10th century the site was occupied by the Pisans in the 13th century then. By the Genoese Here landed Sampiero Corso in 1564 to retake Corsica. Frequent pirate attacks led to the place in 1794 consisted of only 4 houses. In the 19th century saw a rapid population growth.
