Propylenglycoldinitrat is an organic chemical compound, an ester of nitric acid and the propylene glycol. It has a structural similarity to nitroglycerin, is sensitive, explosive and flammable to shocks.

Production and representation

They are prepared by the nitration of 1,2-propylene glycol with a mixture of nitric acid and sulfuric acid.

Properties

In Propylenglycoldinitrat is a colorless, slightly water-soluble, explosive liquid under reduced pressure (10 mmHg ) shows a boiling point of 92 ° C. The standard enthalpy of formation is -297 kJ · mol -1, the explosion heat 5393 kJ · mol -1. For the lead block bulge, a value of 550 g cm3/10 was measured.

Use

Propylenglycoldinitrat is the major component of the gasoline fuel 2, which is used in a number of torpedo modern types, including the Mark -46 lightweight torpedo, the Mark 48 torpedo and Spearfish.

Safety

The LD50 in rats for subcutaneous administration 453 milligrams per kilogram of body weight, taken orally 250 milligrams per kilogram. In humans, ataxia nausea, dizziness and headaches can occur at concentrations as low as 1.5 ppm, still prepared from 0.5 ppm. As an antidote for poisoning methylene blue can be used.
