Prosper Duvergier de Hauranne

Prosper Duvergier de Hauranne ( born August 3, 1798 in Rouen, Seine- Maritime, † May 20 1881 in Herry, Département Cher) was a French journalist and politician.

Life and work

Prosper Duvergier de Hauranne was since his trip to the United Kingdom 1820/1821 an advocate of parliamentary monarchy and in 1831 deputy of Cher. In 1827 he married the daughter of Baron Micoud d' UMons. As a Liberal, he was fighting the restoration of the Bourbons and supported the reign of Louis -Philippe I. After he was subjected to repression because of its criticism of the omnipotence of the king, he approached at the positions of Adolphe Thiers and François Guizot and went into opposition.

As one of the organizers of the reform banquets he signed on 22 February 1848, the indictment against the Guizot ministry, and was elected by the Constituent Assembly of the Republic in and later to the Commission to draft the constitution. In both meetings, he represented the anti-republican -minded rights. In 1849 he fell in the election, but was re-elected to the National Assembly in December 1850. After the coup of Louis Napoleon Bonaparte on December 2, 1851 he was arrested five weeks and went to Piedmont temporarily exiled from now engaged in historical studies, and returned in 1853 to Paris.

After his return he withdrew from public life and focused completely on his political writings. Since 1824 he had for several magazines, including the "Globe ", " La Revue Française " and " Revue des Deux Mondes ." He wrote with only moderate success several comedies, including: Les marineurs écossais ou une matinée (1820 ), M. Sensitive (1821 ) and Le sans le savoir jaloux. He was a friend of Stendhal and Victor Hugo. 1870 Duvergier de Hauranne included as successor to the late Victor de Broglie diplomats to the Académie française ( fauteuil 24).
