Protestantism in Vietnam

Protestants in Vietnam provide a numerically small Christian denomination in Vietnam.

Dissemination of Churches

However, it is the fastest- growing religious minority, which is currently 0.5 to 2% of the population (about one million).

Most of Protestantism is growing among ethnic minorities ( Montagnards ) such as the H'mong, Ede, Jarai and the Bahnars. Two-thirds of Protestants are among the hill tribes.

Approximately 10,000 people are members of Pentecostal churches. There are about 39 039 members of hill tribes churches. In 2001, the number of followers of illegal house churches 200,000.

The first recognized by the Government of Protestant organization, the Evangelical Church of North Vietnam, founded in 1963. The officially recognized Protestant churches are the Southern Evangelical Church of Vietnam, the Evangelical Church of Vietnam North, part of the Mennonite Church, the Seventh- day Adventist Church and the Grace Baptist Church in Ho Chi Minh City.

Legal situation

The Constitution guarantees freedom of religion. Several hundred house churches of minority peoples were confiscated or destroyed after the Communist takeover in 1975. In 2005 there was pressure on Protestants to renounce their faith in villages of northern Vietnam. 2005 was allowed to reopen hundreds of house churches closed in 2001. A twisted 2007 film documents the clandestine churches and their persecution by authorities.

On 19 November 2006, was a historic church of the Catholic Archdiocese and the Evangelical Church of Vietnam North.

In July 2012, security forces have a church in a northern province violently dispersed. Were in communist countries and Christians are being harassed massively.
