Protoanemonin (also Anemonol or Ranunculol ) is a lactone of the hydroxy- penta-2 ,4- dienoic acid that is present as a toxin in all Ranunculaceae.
It is released in violation of the plants and on contact with the skin or mucous membrane it comes to toxic symptoms such as redness, itching or even blistering of the skin ( Hahnenfußdermatitis ). In the inner receiving it affects the nervous system: it comes to vomiting, diarrhea and dizziness, but also to convulsions and paralysis.
It is effective against fungi.
When drying the plant protoanemonin is transferred to the non-toxic Anemonin.
