Protogenoi

A Protogonos or Protogenos (Pl. Protogonoi or Protogenoi, gr Πρωτόγενοι, first born ), in Greek mythology, in the strict sense a name for Phanes, the first God in the cosmogony of the Orphic.

From a parody of the altorphische cosmogony of Aristophanes shows that in the early Orphists Phanes was not the first God, but Chronos had created an egg for Aether. Nyx gave birth to the egg from which then the creator god Eros was born.

In a broader sense the Protogonoi are divine incarnations of the original principles that form in many theogonies Greek authors, the first generation of gods, if this then come further generations of gods, nymphs and other mythical figures. For example, the chaos as well as parts of the resulting first generation of gods from the Theogony of Hesiod Protogonoi, just like the first generation of gods according to Orphic Phanes.
