Proton Waja

Proton Waja (2000-2006)

The Proton Waja is a car of the lower middle class, which is being built by Malaysian carmaker Proton. The four-door sedan that was designed by Proton itself, was introduced in August 2000. Thus, the Waja was the first car, which was constructed in Malaysia. The name Waja means " hard" (such as steel ) and emphasizes the strength of the Waja compared with previous designs. Reason for this name was the prevailing opinion in the domestic market that Proton cars were weaker than other brands. In Europe, the Waja is offered as a Proton Impian. This name also comes from the Malay and in German means "dream".

History

The Waja is the first model that was developed in the design offices of the proton. The development of the car began in the late 1990s together with the Campro the engine, but the development of this engine was still in progress when the Waja came out. Therefore, the Waja was initially equipped with the 4G18 engine from Mitsubishi, before moving to the Campro engines in 2006. The car came out in August 2000, which coincided with the introduction of the new Proton logo. The first delivered Waja had significant quality problems because some suppliers were under quality controls in order to satisfy the great demand initially. The quality of the components was until 2005, however, improved significantly.

Since its debut, the Waja was revised twice. The first small facelift took place in mid-2006 and only covered taillights. 2007, the second facelift took place on 19 January 2007, the new Waja was launched with a revised Savvy. He had received a new grille, which looked similar to the Savvy. He is now also equipped in Malaysia equipped with ABS and airbags; previously there were these two safety features extra charge. End of 2005, Proton, a further variant of the Waja, the Waja Chancellor. The cars were used as a representation of the ASEAN sedans for the meeting of leaders in the city center of Kuala Lumpur and officially launched in early 2006. The Waja Chancellor has a longer wheelbase and the 2.0-liter V6 engine, which was also used in the Perdana and is supplied by Mitsubishi. 2008, a new Waja with improved Campro engine and a new center console with 2-DIN Clarion stereo came out.

In the UK, where the Waja is offered as Impian, the sale did not start until April 2001. The car has since remained unchanged. The Impian is only available as RHD, in other European countries the car is sold as a Waja. The sales were never very high, since the car was worse than its competitors when it was unveiled and also all of these competitors have since been replaced with new designs. His good handling characteristics, its good quality, its low price and good service will make further is the Impian for UK customers interesting.

In the early years the Waja was powered by a 1.6 -liter four-cylinder SOHC in-line engine from Mitsubishi, type 4G18, driven. The multi-point injection (MPI), internally ventilated disc brakes front and rear disc brakes are standard. All Waja, with the exception of the model Chancellor, are available with five-speed manual or four-stage automatic transmission.

In 2002, the 1.8 L variant was introduced, which is powered by the same engine as the Renault Laguna II The 1.8 -liter model features drive-by -wire technology and camshaft timing (VVT ). However, this model sold poorly in the domestic market, as the Malay could be friends with either the Japanese technology is still the European motor. Thus was allowed to expire the 1.8 liter again the very next year.

Since January 2006, the Campro engine is also installed in the Waja. Although the engine is similar to the sister model Gen-2, the DOHC engine delivers the Waja higher performance and higher torque, probably due to altered motor control and the revised intake system. The model 2008 has a Campro CPS engine with adjustable cam (VVT ), which was not available in previous Waja Campro - models.

The Waja Chancellor from 2006 had a longer wheelbase and was powered by a 2.0 -liter V6 engine from Mitsubishi, Type 6A12, driven, which was also used in the Perdana. This car is only available with four- speed automatic transmission.

Race

For three years - 2002 to 2004 - the Waja was used in the BTCC. There he was listed as Petronas Syntium proton. However, the chronically underfunded team had little racing success, won a race and performed significantly worse than other factory teams, although it had good drivers, such as in the first two years, David Leslie and Phil Bennett. In 2004, two new riders, Shaun Watson -Smith and the Malay Star Fariqe Hairuman, but after these two were able to achieve nothing, the team gave up at the end.

Security

The Waja / Impian is currently the only proton, which has undergone a Euro NCAP crash test. The result of the tests carried out in 2002 was disappointing.

EuroNCAP Crash Test 2002

  • Safety for adult occupants: 3 of 5 stars
  • Safety for pedestrians: 1 out of 5 stars

The British automobile magazine Top Gear showed photos of a damaged Proton Waja with a damaged Toyota Avensis to show the differences between a three star and five star rated car in a frontal impact on a deformable steel barrier.
