Provisional Government of Southern Ireland

In Irish history, there were two provisional governments:

  • The provisional government that signed the Easter proclamation in the Easter Rising of 1916, and
  • The provisional government in the transition period to the Irish Free State in 1922

The Provisional Government 1916

On the first day of the Easter Rising in Dublin on April 24, 1916 Patrick Pearse read out the Proclamation of Easter. This proclamation was signed by the " Provisional Government of the Irish Republic " ( Provisional Government of the Irish Republic). The rebellion was quickly put down, so that the Provisional Government existed only for a short time on the paper.

The signatories of the Proclamation in detail were:

  • Thomas J. Clarke
  • Sean MacDiarmada
  • Thomas MacDonagh
  • Patrick Pearse
  • Éamonn Ceannt
  • James Connolly
  • Joseph Plunkett

The Provisional Government 1922

The " Provisional Government " ( Provisional Government) was in British politics History, 1922, the Transitional Government of Southern Ireland from the signing of the Anglo -Irish Treaty, until the establishment of the Irish Free State. It is also called " Provisional Government of Ireland " ( Provisional Government of Ireland ) and also due to the fact that their influence is not still went to Northern Ireland as a " Provisional Government of Southern Ireland " ( Provisional Government of Southern Ireland) called.

Under the Dáil Constitution of the Irish Republic from 1919 existed Dáil Éireann ( the revolutionary parliament of the Irish Republic ) even after the contract further. Eamon de Valera gave up the presidency, which led to a new election. De Valera tried in this way the treaty, which was recently adopted by the Dáil to infiltrate, but Arthur Griffith won the election and became president ( Griffith called President of Dáil Éireann - in contrast to de Valera, the President of the Republic preferred ).

But this government was under UK law, no official powers, so that a co-existing government was that - was higher against the southern Irish House of Commons responsible - in theory. Their board was chaired by Michael Collins.

After the death of Collins and Griffith in August 1922 took over WT Cosgrave, both the Office of the President of Dáil Éireann and the Chairman of the Provisional Government, so that both offices merged. In December 1922, both Southern Ireland and the Irish Republic were replaced, the Irish Free State.
