Prumnopitys

New Zealand Kirscheibe ( Prumnopitys taxifolia )

Prumnopitys is a genus of flowering plants in the family of Podocarpus plants ( Podocarpaceae ). They are also called cherry yew. Some species are important timber suppliers.

Dissemination

The genus has a disjoint area: one in eastern Australia, New Caledonia and New Zealand, on the other hand, from Chile to Venezuela and Costa Rica.

Description

Prumnopitys species are trees, which can reach heights of growth of 60 m. The bark is smooth and reddish to yellowish brown, slightly darker inside but becoming gray by the weather; it breaks on older trees in irregular, more or less square plates that are 3 to 5 mm thick and 3 to 10 cm tall. The leaf buds are small protected with overlapping triangular bud scales. The leaves are spirally arranged on the branch.

Prumnopitys species are dioecious getrenntgeschlechtig ( dioecious ). The male cones are available individually or in groups. The seeds are surrounded by an aril.
