Prussian State Archive Königsberg

The Prussian State Archives Königsberg was until 1945 in Königsberg ( Prussia).

For centuries the Konigsberg State Archives in the oldest part of the Königsberg Castle, the western north wing housed. The files were partly in strong oak drawers of the Order of Time.

After the library of the University of Strasbourg was burned at the German siege in the Franco-German War of 1870, the Prussian State Archives ( like many other German institutions) helped with the refurbishment and left the Strasbourg Library 70,000 duplicates.

From 1929 to 1930, a new building for the State Archives at Hansa ring 31 on the hooves (Königsberg ) was established by Regierungsbaurat Robert Liebenthal in the style of New Objectivity. The building still exists today and is used as a district library.

The last archive director was Max Hein. The most valuable files could be outsourced in time, after the war they were initially located at the National Archives warehouse Göttingen under the direction of Kurt Forstreuter. Rescued to 85 %, they are located since 1978 as XX. Department of the Secret State Archives Prussian Cultural Heritage in Berlin.
