Psychrolutes sculpin

The thick head or Quappengroppen ( Psychrolutidae ) live in the Indian Ocean, the Atlantic and the Pacific, on the ground, from coastal waters to depths of up to 2800 meters. The fish can be 7 to 70 inches long depending on the type.

Features

Her head is armored with bony plates, the body is scaleless and partially covered with thorny bone plates. The lateral line is short and has more than 20 pores. The pelvic fins are small and have only a hard and three soft fin rays.

System

There are two subfamilies, which may but do not constitute monophyla, eight genera and about 40 species:

Subfamily Cottunculinae

In the subfamily Cottunculinae the head is heavily ossified and often with head spines. The edges of the Inter Orbi Talia are hard, the viewing distance is less than twice the eye diameter. Body and fins are usually not of the same color.
