Public Health Genomics

The advances in genome research have put discussions about new approaches to prevention and treatment in transition. The scientific multidisciplinary public health can no longer ignore genomic advances, but has to deal with the opportunities and risks associated with the integration of genomic knowledge into public concern for the health of all. This discourse is conducted under the umbrella of Public Health Genomics.

According to a standard definition of an international panel of experts is Public Health Genomics, a company that is engaged in the responsible and effective transfer of genome - based knowledge and technologies for the benefit of population health ( Bellagio Group on Public Health Genomics, 2005).

Public Health Genomics in Germany

The first institutionalized approach to deal with issues of Public Health Genomics, was 2003/2004 in the Cooperation Group Public Health Genetics at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research ( ZiF ) at Bielefeld University under the direction of the social physician and public health researcher Angela Brand, MPH.

It was followed by the initiation of the European Network of Public Health Genomics European Network ( PHGEN ) by the National Institute of Public Health NRW. This network is funded by the European Commission ( DG SANCO). It has to discuss approaches to the goal of the Public Health Genomics and its impact in Europe to stimulate these discussions in the 31 member countries of PHGEN and identify necessary actions and paths of action of the European Commission.

In 2006, the German Center for Public Health Genomics ( DZPHG ) was founded at the University of Applied Sciences Bielefeld. This center operates on a model of the Public Health Genetics Unit in Cambridge (UK ) and the National Office of Public Health Genomics in the U.S..
