Dissemination and locations

The species occurs in many parts of Europe, in temperate Asia, northwest Africa and in North America. In Germany Puccinellia distans is common on the coasts, inland it is scattered before. Due to the salt spreading it spreads particularly along roads. In Austria, the species is on roadsides often, otherwise rare, it is absent in Vorarlberg and Liechtenstein.

The Ordinary salt plume grows in salt marshes, meadows, along roadsides and on dumps. He is salt- loving and prefers nutrient- rich, saline clay soils. It is an optional Halophyt. It occurs to the montane altitudinal zone and rises to 1500 meters above sea level.

It is a Assoziationscharakterart the salt plume Society ( Puccinellietum distantis ).
