Puerto Rican Socialist Party

The Partido Socialista Puertorriqueño was a political party in Puerto Rico that was active 1971-1993.

History

The party was founded in the eighth assembly of the movement for independence ( Movimiento Pro Independencia MPI) on 28 November 1971. The most important leader of the party was Juan Mari Brás. The senator ran in 1976 as governor together with Carlos Gallisá in the elections 1980., The party called for full independence for Puerto Rico, and a socialist government for the country. In the 1980 election, the Partido Socialista Puertorriqueno reached almost 5% of the votes cast.
