Pullman is a city in Whitman County in the eastern part of the U.S. state of Washington. The city has 24,675 inhabitants (as of 2000) and is home to the Washington State University.

Geography

Pullman is located in the Palouse prairie, a fertile hills, cultivated in the mainly wheat, beans, peas and lentils, and has a Wassersorgung by groundwater.

The city is situated on four hills by which it is divided into four roughly equal parts of the city. These are clockwise College Hill, Sunnyside Hill, Military Hill and Pioneer Hill.

History

Bolin Farr encamped in 1876 as the first settlers at the confluence of Dry Flat Creek and Missouri Flat Creek. This year, Dan McKenzie and William Ellsworth arrived to stake out land and to assert their rights. The first post office was established here under the name of Three Forks, after the three watercourses Missouri Flat Creek, Dry Fork and South Fork of the Palouse River, which flow together here. In the spring of 1881, Orville Stewart opened a store and Bolin Farr rodete about four acres of his land to create a city. Still in the same decade, the area was newly made by Dan McKenzie and Charles Moore ( of Moscow) and named after George Mortimer Pullman, who had founded the Pullman Car Company.

1961 Pullman was a City. The City has a city council of seven elected members and one appointed managing director. The current mayor is Glenn A. Johnson, a high school teacher at the Edward R. Murrow School of Communication at Washington State University.

Culture

There are in Pullman, Pullman Civic Theatre (founded 1946) and the WSU Theatre of the University. In Beasley Performing Arts Coliseum various major events (eg concerts, ballets, operas, etc.) are listed. The Washington Idaho Symphony is the local philharmonic orchestra.

On the campus of WSU, there is the Museum of Anthropology, the WSU Museum of Art and various collections.
