Punkah

Pankha ( Hindustani ), also Punkah called a palm fronds. Originally a Pankha was a portable fan which was made from a Palmyra or Borassus palm leaf. This name has become established over time in the Anglo -Indian word usage (hence the spelling Punkah ) as the name for a (ceiling ) Fan vibration. This was attached to the ceiling and was a servant ( Kuli ) manually vibrated. The Arabs knew this kind of Luftfächelung since the 8th century. Enforced has this version of the fan in India during the colonial period in the late 18th century. End of the 19th century / the subjects were driven by electric motors and found both in factories and barracks of the American South as well (although gorgeous ) in the salons of stately homes. The arisen in the 20th century, to be produced cheaper and poorer maintenance- axial ceiling fans replaced most Pankhas over time.
