The Punta La Marmora is the highest peak of the Gennargentu Massif, the highest elevation of Sardinia.
Location
The mountain is located in the Barbagie, an area in the east of the island. The Punta La Marmora is with 1834 m the highest point of a semi-circular mountain ridge. It is located on the territory of the municipalities Desulo and Arzana in the province of Nuoro.
Origin of the name
The Punta La Marmora is named after the General and Senator Alberto La Marmora, who Sardinia during the first half of the 19th century intensively explored and measured. Previously named the mountain in Sardinian Perdas Caprias ( "Goat Rock " ) or Predas Carpìas ( " two tier rock "). In addition to the official name of the Sardinian names often appear on maps.
