Purple Rain (song)

Purple Rain is a 1984 song published by the U.S. musician Prince. It is included on the eponymous album Purple Rain, which in turn is the soundtrack to the film. Prince picked up the piece with his former backing band The Revolution. The song was Prince 's first top ten hit single in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. In England Purple Rain Silver status reached 200,000 copies sold in the U.S. and Gold status for a million-selling singles.

Formation

Prince picked up the piece on August 3, 1983. At that time he played with his backing band The Revolution, a 70 -minute benefit concert for the Minnesota Dance Theatre, in the music club First Avenue in Minneapolis. This concert, in which Prince among other things, then also still unreleased songs Let's Go Crazy, Computer Blue, I Would Die 4 U and Baby I'm a Star played, was recorded by sound engineers David Leonard and David Z. Rivkin. Guitarist Wendy Melvoin was at this concert debut in Prince's backing band The Revolution. The live version of the then unreleased songs Purple Rain took 13 minutes.

Publication

Purple Rain was coupled on 26 September 1984 as the third single from the album Purple Rain. The song appeared in a shortened single edit version with a length of 4:04 minutes. The B-side to the song God was unpublished until now. The music video for the song taken from the film Purple Rain and shows how Prince recites the song on stage in music club First Avenue.
