Putuo Zongcheng Temple

Called The Putuo Temple or Temple of Zongcheng Potaraka Doctrine (普陀 宗 乘 之 庙, Putuo Zongcheng miao zhi, English Putuo Zongsheng Temple / Temple of the Doctrine of Potaraka ), also called " Small Potala Temple," is one of the eight outer temples in Chengde ( Jehol ) in the Chinese province of Hebei. The Buddhist temple is located in the north of the park complex of the Summer Palace on the north side of the "Lion Tales" on a hill.

The temple was built in the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty in the years 1767-1771. The plant covers an area of 220,000 square meters. It was built in the architectural style of the Han Chinese and the Tibetans. Its main building, called the Great Red Terrace ( Dahongtai ) replicates the central building of the Tibetan Potala Palace in Lhasa. The Chinese word Pǔtuózōngchéng普陀 宗 乘is a translation of the Tibetan word for Potala.

The temple was built in 1771 to celebrate the 60th birthday of Emperor Qianlong (reigned 1735-1796, died 1799) and his mother 's 80th birthday. At that time, the Kalmyk tribe of Torgot (see Oirat Mongols ) who had moved the end of the Ming Dynasty in the catchment area of ​​the Volga, returned to Chinese territory. Qianlong received in this temple the Kalmückenführer Ubashi Khan from the tribe of Torgot.

In the temple there are four plaques are speaking with stone carvings in Manchu, Chinese, Mongolian and Tibetan script, inscriptions recalling the events of Return of the Torgot to China.

The Putuo Zongcheng Temple ( Putuo Zongcheng miao zhi ) is since 1961 on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China ( 1-117 ).
