Qalyoub train collision

The railway accident Qaliub was a rear-end collision, at the August 21, 2006, two trains collided in the Egyptian city Qaliub. 58 people were killed.

Starting position

Two high-traffic commuter trains of the Egyptian State Railways, one of Benha and one of Mansura drove in the morning rush hour to the south, across Cairo to. The train from Benha stopped before the entry signal of the station of Qaliub, 20 km north of Cairo.

The accident

The train from Mansura drove about 80 km / h also on the Qaliub train station and because of a defect in the signal conditioning on the retentive train from Benha. Four cars of the train derailed and rolled over, as the locomotive of the train from Mansura. The train from Benha began to burn.

Hanafi Abdel Qawi, director of the Egyptian State Railways, was dismissed because of the accident. 14 employees of the railway company were charged with gross negligence and sentenced to prison because they had failed to repair the defective signal conditioning.
