Quake-Catcher Network

Quake - Catcher Network (abbreviated QCN ) is a project for distributed computing ( distributed computing ) Stanford University with the objective of register earthquakes by means of global distribution of seismic sensors. For this, the vibration sensors in laptops or USB be used on PCs connected sensors. In order to distinguish whether it is in fact an earthquake or just a local vibration ( for example because you have moved the notebook ), as many sensors in the vicinity should be.

As a platform, the Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing is employed. The application that is used to register is running, currently under Microsoft Windows (32 -bit from 98 and 64-bit ), Linux (32- bit) and Mac OS X (PowerPC 10.3 or later, Intel 10.4 or higher and Intel 64- bit 10.5 ). The use of laptops is to make sure that they have a built-in shock sensor. The notebooks that come with such a sensor, for example, include Apple MacBooks from 2005, ThinkPad from 2003.

Hewlett -Packard and Acer notebooks from 2007 are not currently supported by the project, although there are sensors.

If a laptop does not have a built-in sensor, you can connect an external sensor like a PC.
