Quinchao Island

Quinchao is an island in the south of Chile in the Región de los Lagos. It is with an area of ​​120 km ² the second largest island of Chiloé Archipelago. From the main island of Chiloe it is separated by the channel of Dalcahue. On it operates daily ferry between Dalcahue and La Pasada needs this just five minutes. On the island is the largest part of the municipality Quinchao ( the rest are small islands ) as well as the community Curaco de Vélez. Both communities together have 12,379 inhabitants.

The largest part of the forest that covered the whole island, is now replaced by prairie or used for potato cultivation.

Some of the wooden churches of Quinchao, namely Quinchao and Achao and the church on the small island Caguach were included along with other of the Chiloé Archipelago in the World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2000.
