The Rýchlostná cesta R1 (until 1999 DIAĽNICA D65) is an expressway in Slovakia. The expressway is part of the European road E 58, E 77 and E 571

It starts in the west in Trnava before it crosses the highway D1. On its course to the east, the R1 reaches the regional capitals Nitra, Zvolen and Banská Bystrica. Near Žiar nad Hronom ( 123 km ) is the connection of R2 to the northwest in the direction of Prievidza and Trenčín in construction.

The highway is for vehicles under 3.5 tonnes almost completely highway toll. Exceptions exist in the short local entry in Nitra Zobor and the City route Banská Bystrica. Large sections of the highway caused by upgrade the existing four-lane state highways, so that in some places no suitable parallel roads exist.

History

The first parts were built as early as the 1970s (as state roads I/51 Bab - Nitra, 17.4 km and I/66 Kováčová - Banská Bystrica, 18.2 km, both completed in 1980 ). In the 1980s, the distance between Sasovske Podhradie and Budča was added ( state road I/50, 15.3 km, completed in 1986). The bypass of Sered was built gradually from 1983 to 1995. The four-lane extension of the route Trnava - Báb was not completed until 2000. From 1987 to 1999, the route was planned as motorway D65, but was downgraded to the highway due to the rejected motorway D22 category, 5 ( in Slovakia Motorways configured with a cross section of 26.5 m or 24.5 m). In the 1990s, again began construction in Pohronie, as the first of the two-lane bypass Žarnovica was finished in 1998. The route from Hronský Beňadik to Žarnovica, including second carriageway of the ring road of Žarnovica was gradually expanded from 2003 to 2006, together with the 2.8 km long route Tekovské Nemce - Hronský Beňadik (2.8 km, completed 2005). The 3 km long connection between the two ends in Zvolen ( Budča - Kováčová ) was built in 2004. The gap in Pohronie was released in two parts: the first part of Žarnovica to Lehôtka pod Brehmi was opened in November 2009. The gap of Lehôtka pod Brehmi to Sasovske Podhradie was removed after several months delay due to landslide in January 2011, a 1 km long piece at Žiar nad Hronom was even until August 2011, only two lanes.

The construction of the 46 km stretch between Tekovské Nemce ( just before the border of the districts of Nitra / Banská Bystrica ) and Nitra and the bypass of Nitra. began in September 2009 and was released after 25 months of construction, 28 October 2011 traffic. This project was built as a PPP project, the company Granvia is for 30 years, the operators after the completion of the new route. The project of the distance from Nitra to Tekovské Nemce and the bypass of Banská Bystrica received the official name PR1BINA, reminiscent of the early medieval princes Pribinov on 14 July 2011.

Extension

The entire expressway is expanded in cross-section R22, 5, ie two lanes plus narrow emergency lane in each direction. A kilometer long piece between junctions Banská Bystrica - Radvaň (161) and Banská Bystrica - Hušták (162 ) is expanded to six lanes with no hard shoulder; in the further course to Kováčová (146 ) there is a wide median strip with space for an additional lanes in each direction. Slow lane there only once and that between the junction Hronský Beňadik (86 ) and just before gas station Tekovské Nemce in Nitra direction over a length of about 2.8 km.

Building and Planning

An extension to the motorway D1 in the northern Slovak town Ružomberok is mostly at the planning stage, is in operation, only the bypass of Banská Bystrica with a length of nearly 6 km. This section is also built by Granvia Construction and operation after commissioning in July 2012 for 30 years. This project is presented as an alternative to section Žilina Ružomberok the D1 motorway, but is not expected to run in the near future.

There are long term plans to build the highway further west. The new building would leave the current route somewhere between Vlčkovce and Sered and further extend around Sládkovičovo and mostly along the north side of the Little Danube to the node with the D4 in Most pri Bratislave. The length of this design is 42,140 m.
