The Radeon 9000 series is a series of desktop graphics chip company ATI Technologies and successor to the ATI Radeon 8000 series. She is the third generation of graphics processors with ATI Radeon and the name came in the years 2002 to 2004 on the market. It was replaced by the ATI Radeon X series. With this series, specifically the Radeon 9700 Pro, ATI Technologies entered the high-end market in the graphics area. A direct competitor was the GeForce 4 - and partly the GeForce FX series of the manufacturer Nvidia.

Naming

All graphics chips are identified by a four digit number "9" begins with a general ( for Radeon 9000). The second digit divides the family into different market segments, the third and fourth digits are used to further diversification. Furthermore, the models are categorized into different variants. These are marked with an appropriate symbol behind the model number, which leads to a very large variety of model names in total.

Abbreviation:

• SE - "Slow Edition", the slowest model of a segment
• [ no suffix ] - standard version
• XL - special edition for the OEM market
• Pro - Faster model of a segment, the top model in the low-end segment and in the 9700 series
• XT - Most powerful chip, the top model in the high-end and mainstream segment

Other prefixes such as "RX ", " TX " or " XXL" are not official designations from ATI, but marketing names of individual graphics card manufacturer, which is to be subject to special properties.
