Ras Lanuf (Arabic راس لانوف ) is located on the Gulf of Sidra, a small town with about 13,300 inhabitants (extrapolation 2010) Munizip Surt in Libya.

Location

Nearby places are as- Sidr (10 km west of the housing estate) and Ben Jawad ( about 40 km north-west ) and El Agheila (70 km southeast).

Ras Lanuf, making it the easternmost coastal town of the historic province of Tripolitania. About 35 km south-east along the coastal road Via Balbo was from 1937 to 1970 the Arch Arco dei Fileni.

Infrastructure

About 5 km south-east of the residential area of Ras Lanuf is the cottage settlement for the employees of the same petroleum refinery and oil terminal which is the most important for Libyan oil exports in Al Burayqah next to it. The refinery is located 5 km away to the southeast near the oil port. The state Ras Lanuf Refinery is since 1983 one of the most important refineries Libya and is operated by the Ras Lanuf Oil & Gas Processing Company ( Rasco ), a subsidiary of the National Oil Corporation. A running south road leads to the Dahra - oil fields and is closed to the public. In addition to the cottage settlement is the new airfield Ras Lanuf.

During the construction of the railway line Sirt - Benghazi a construction camp and in 2010 a railway was processing of RŽD from 2008 near the town erected.

History

In the uprising in Libya in 2011, it came Ras Lanuf to unrest. Insurgents reported on March 4, 2011 to have taken over the city by government troops. On 8 March, the Libyan Air Force flew at least five airstrikes in Ras Lanuf. This rebel positions were attacked, but also hit residential areas. After Ras Lanuf had meanwhile fallen back into the hands of government troops on March 11, the city of 27 March 2011 was recaptured by the rebels. On March 30, the city fell back to government forces. On 23 August 2011, the city was occupied again by the rebels.
