Raab Doppelraab

The Doppelraab is a two-seat, made of mixed fiber glider.

History

The Munich-based commercial teacher Fritz Raab (1909-1989) developed the Doppelraab around 1949 /50 and built the first experimental model the Aero - Club Dachau. The first flight took place in 1951 on the occasion of the Rhön meeting held on the water dome.

Construction

The aim of the design was an equally simple to build, to create like flying and entertaining aircraft for glider training. To this end, the designer Fritz Raab went some unusual ways. Thus, the seat of the flight instructor is greatly increased, making it possible for him to directly operate from behind the front -mounted control stick. In this way it is possible to dispense with an elaborate double tax. The hull was in the cockpit area of steel pipe, from the trailing edge of the wings of the rear fuselage section was manufactured in timber construction, as well as wings and rudder. Deviating there were also Hulls made entirely of steel pipe.

Variants

By 1955, several modifications have been made, so that there were a total of six different series. From the experimental class V -1, there were three copies that struck by her unusual chassis with two wheels arranged one behind the other. The variants of V -2 and V-3 were built by Hirth and had over the original design changed seats. As of version V-5 spoilers have been installed in the wings, while the V-6 version had to be increased by 64 centimeters wingspan, which should bring improved glide. A total of approximately 400 Doppelraab were built, about 100 Build Your Own by clubs and about 300 by the company Schempp-Hirth in Kirchheim / Teck.
