RAAF Base Darwin ( IATA: DRW, ICAO: YPDN ) is a military airfield of the Royal Australian Air Force Six kilometers north- west of Darwin in the Northern Territory. The base shares the start and runways with the Darwin airport.

History

The first airfield was built in 1938 and a military base was opened here on June 1, 1940. During World War II the base Headquartered very many aircraft the RAAF and the United States Army Air Forces. The USAF stationed briefly inter alia Consolidated B -24 to the base. Several times was bombed by the Japanese armed forces of the base.

After the cyclone Tracy the evacuation of the people were carried out of this base from.

Current usage

Today, a total of eight units are stationed at the base. As a single aircraft type operates the 92 Wing Detachment, the Lockheed AP -3C "Orion".
