Rabbi Jonathan

R. Jonathan was a Jewish scholar of the ancient world, is counted among the Tannaim of the third generation and worked around the middle of the second century AD in Babylonia.

He was one of the foremost disciples of Ishmael and fellow student and opponent R. Joschias.

His identity has not been definitively clarified in the research, some consider him to be the same person as Jonathan ( Nathan ) ben Joseph ( or Jose).

In the Mishnah, he is only called once, with a saying of the Fathers in Proverbs:
