Radia Perlman

Radia Perlman ( born 1952 in Portsmouth) is an American software developer and network engineer. Sometimes it is referred to as the mother of the Internet. It is famous for their invention of the Spanning Tree Protocol, which is essential for the progress of network bridges. Furthermore, it has made significant contributions in many other areas of network design and standardization, such as the link-state protocols. She received a bachelor's and master's degree in mathematics, a Ph.D. in Computer Science from MIT. In addition, she was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Royal Institute of Technology Stockholm ( KHT ). Her doctoral work at MIT addresses the issue of routing in serious network failures and forms the basis for the bulk of the work in this area.

Radia Perlman published scientific articles, is author and editor of the Radia Perlman Series in Computer Networking and Security. She is currently employed by Intel. She is the inventor of more than 38 patents alone at Sun Microsystems.
