Rafael Guízar y Valencia

The Holy Guízar Rafael Valencia ( born April 16, 1878 in Cotija, Michoacán, Mexico, † June 6, 1938 ) was a Roman Catholic bishop of Veracruz- Jalapa, Mexico.

Life

Guízar Valencia was born in Cotija de la Paz in the Mexican state of Michoacan. He was the fourth of eleven children. His brother Antonio became Archbishop of Chihuahua. His nephew was Marcial Maciel, founder of the Legionaries of Christ. The priests ordained Rafael Guízar at the age of 23 years in Zamora in June 1901, was first in the local Spiritual Seminary operates. There, he taught dogmatic theology. Soon after, he was appointed by Pope Leo XIII. appointed apostolic missionary and has started in the villages of Mexico with the missions. He used a simple catechism, which he himself had written.

As bishop he cared intensely about the seminary, established it new in Xalapa. Later it moved due to the anti-clerical forces to Mexico City.

Guizar Valencia campaigned during the Mexican Revolution (1910-1917) for the victims and their families. In 1913, he worked as a missionary among soldiers in Mexico City, Puebla and Morelos. He has performed against the mexanikanische government, which wanted to limit the influence of the Catholic Church in Mexico. During the time of persecution of the Church, he fled first to the United States to exile, later to Guatemala and finally to Cuba. There he was active in mission. Later he returned shortly back to Mexico. However, he was soon forced out again, to leave the country. He evangelised again in the United States, Cuba, Guatemala and Colombia.

Since 1951, a beatification process was running, on 15 October 2006, he was called by Pope Benedict XVI. canonized.
