Rafael Lapesa

Rafael Lapesa ( born February 8, 1908 in Valencia, † February 1, 2001 in Madrid) was a Spanish linguist and Hispanist.

Life and work

Rafael Melgar Lapesa studied in Madrid at Ramón Menéndez Pidal, Tomás Navarro Tomás and Américo Castro. He received his doctorate in 1931 with the work of El dialecto asturiano occidental en la Edad Media (Sevilla 1998). He then taught in Madrid (1932-1941), Oviedo (1942 ) and Salamanca ( 1942-1947 ) and from 1947 to 1978 in the Department of Spanish Language History at the University Complutense of Madrid. Between 1948 and 1968 he taught at various U.S. and Latin American universities. Special merit he earned by his commitment to the project of the Academy Diccionario de la lengua española histórico (A- APASANCA / B Bajoca, Madrid 1960-1996 ). The Foundation for the follow-up project bears his name: Fundación Instituto de Investigación para el Nuevo diccionario Rafael Lapesa histórico de la lengua española ( 2005).

Starting in 1954, was a member of the Real Academia Española Lapesa whose secretary he was from 1964 to 1971. From 1974 to 1977 he was president of the International, founded in 1962 Hispanistengesellschaft ( Asociación Internacional de Hispanistas, AIH). Lapesa was more honorary doctorates, including in Helsinki and Toulouse. He was a knight of the Legion of Honour.
