Rafael Puyana

Rafael Puyana Michelsen (born 14 October 1931 in Bogotá, Colombia; † March 1, 2013 in Paris) was a Colombian harpsichordist.

Life

Rafael Puyana comes from a musical family. At age six, he began piano lessons with his aunt, a pianist. Later he was taught by the Italian pianist Giacomo Marcenaro. At thirteen, he made his debut at the Teatro Colón in Bogotá.

As he traveled with sixteen in the United States to study in Boston, grew in him the desire to become a harpsichordist. For eight years he was a student of Wanda Landowska, the most famous harpsichordist this time, which contributed decisively that the harpsichord again entered the consciousness of musicians, instrument makers and composers as an instrument.

Then Puyana went to Paris, where he studied with Nadia Boulanger including composition.

After his return to the U.S., he gave a concert at the City Hall of New York, which was to establish his solo career. Since then he has traveled the world to give concerts and workshops and has so continued employment with the harpsichord, his music and his style of play in the 20th century forward. He has played with Yehudi Menuhin, Leopold Stokowski and Andrés Segovia. Federico Mompou and composers such as Xavier Montsalvatge wrote for him. Among other things, he taught Christopher Hogwood.
