Rainier, Marquess of Montferrat

Rainer (Italian Ranieri, * 1084, † by 1136 ) was Margrave of Montferrat from the noble Aleramiden.

He was the son of Margrave Wilhelm IV and his wife Otta d' Agliè, a subsidiary of Tibaldo d' Aglie. Probably the death of his father in 1100 he inherited the Margraviate.

He married around 1105 Gisela of Burgundy, daughter of Count William I.. Gisela was that of Count Humbert II of Savoy, who had died in 1103 widow and the mother of Adelaide of Savoy, the 1115 King Louis VI. married from France.

Rainer was first described in a deed dated March 23, 1111 as Margrave. In the years 1126 and 1133 he and other members of his family endowed the Cistercian monastery of Santa Maria di Lucedio at Trino from having possession. 1111 and 1116 he lived in the vicinity of the Emperor Henry V..

Rainer and Gisela had several daughters and one son:

  • Adelasia, 1167/69 nun in Vandieu (Provence );
  • Daughter (maybe Isabella ) married Guido IV ( † after 1172 ), Count of Biandrate ( House of Burgundy - Ivrea ).
