Ramanagara ( Kannada: ರಾಮನಗರ Rāmanagara [ rɑ mʌnʌɡʌrʌ ː ]; Also: Ramanagar, Ramanagaram, formerly Closepet ) is a city in the southern Indian state of Karnataka. It is located in the southeast of Karnataka, about 50 kilometers southwest of the capital Bangalore (Bengaluru ). At the time of India's 2001 census, the population was 79 365 Ramanagaras. Since 2007, the city is the administrative center of the newly established district Ramanagara.

During the British colonial period Ramanagara was known as Closepet after General Sir Barry Close ( 1756-1813 ). After Indian independence, the city in Ramanagara ( " Rama - city ") was renamed.
