The Hahnenkamm Coral ( Ramaria botrytis ), also Reddish coral or often just called cockscomb or bear paw, is a species of fungus in the family pig ear relatives.

Features

The fruiting body is 3-20 cm high and wide. He has a short, white stalk, which has an almost bulbous shape. It branches into several strong, dirty white branches which extend upward, but usually somewhat bent. The upper knots are burgundy colored or faded; at the age they are tinged brown yellowish. The juicy flesh is very fragile and whitish to yellowish and reddish in color in the tips of branches.

Artabgrenzung

The Hahnenkamm coral is well marked by its red-brown tips of branches. However, in older paled state, they can communicate with other species of the genus Ramaria, some of which are inedible or mildly toxic, such as the Bauchwehkoralle confused. The latter has längsrunzelige branches in old age.

Ecology

The Hahnenkamm coral grows especially in warmer beech forests, sometimes under oaks or on the edges of various deciduous forests. It occurs on moderately moist to fresh, base-rich but nutrient-poor soils. More common is the fungus found on lime, lime sand, or calcareous marl, rare silicate, crushed stone or gravel. in deciduous and mixed forests, especially under Book, August-November and is quite rare. The fruiting bodies appear from August to October, occasionally also in July.

Dissemination

The Hahnenkamm coral is temperat common to boreal. Besides Europe, it was found in the USA in Oregon. In Europe the fungus from Sweden to Italy as well as France and Britain spread to Poland. In Germany, it is widely used up to Saxony, where the fungus is apparently not detected, however, goes everywhere sharply.

Endangering

The Hahnenkamm coral is rarely understood and in decline. It is classified as RL 2. Gerhardt suggested a greater popularity due to a more frequent occurrence in earlier times due to the numerous common names.

Importance

The Hahnenkamm coral is edible, but not of special quality. The branch tips taste aged bitterly.
