Ramón de la Fuente Leal

Ramón de la Fuente Leal ( born December 31, 1907 in Bilbao, † September 15, 1973 in Madrid), better known as Lafuente, was a Spanish football player and coach.

Career as a football player

Association

Lafuente played with 16 years for FC Barakaldo. In 1926 he moved to Athletic Bilbao and formed there with Guillermo Gorostiza, Bata, José Iraragorri and Chirri II soon a legendary forward line. He won with Bilbao for the seasons 1929/30 and 1930/31 the double, in the years 1932 and 1933 the Spanish Cup in season 1933/34, again the championship and 1927-1934 a total of seven times the Regional Championship of the Basque Country. 1934 Lafuente left after eight years and 64 goals in 211 official matches the club and joined the capital club and promoted Atlético Madrid. After the 1934/35 season, he finished his career.

National

Lafuente debuted on April 17, 1927 as part of a friendly match against Switzerland in the Spanish national team. Until 1935, he played a total of eight internationals. He was also part of the Selección, which participated in the World Cup in 1934 and played it the first knockout round against Brazil ( 3-1 ) and the first quarter-final against Italy ( 1-1 aet ). In scandalous replay of the quarter-final against Italy he was one of seven Spaniards who were replaced due to the hardships of the previous game.

Career as a football coach

In the season 1940/41, Lafuente replaced at the first ten days of the game rehabilitative Ricardo Zamora as manager of Atlético Aviación. His record had five wins, four draws and one defeat. The club won at the end of the season, the Spanish Cup and the Copa Eva Duarte. For the season 1943/44, was Lafuente coach of Deportivo La Coruna. He rose with the Galicians in the 1944/45 season in the Segunda División, however.
