Rancourt (Somme)

Rancourt is a North commune ( as at 1 January 2011) with 191 inhabitants in Somme in the Picardie region. The municipality belongs to the canton Combles and is part of the Communauté de communes du canton de Combles.

Geography

The community is located approximately 4.5 km east of Combles at the department road D1017 ( former Route nationale 17). On the border of the municipality and Bouchavesnes Mountains are a French ( Nécropole française, the largest French military cemetery Battle of the Somme ) and a German military cemetery ( with the remains of 11,422 soldiers) from the First World War. In the town is also a smaller British military cemetery.

History

Rancourt was on the front line in the battle of the Somme in 1916. The municipality received the Croix de guerre as a distinction from 1914 to 1918.
