Ranee Lee

Ranee Lee ( born October 26, 1942 in Brooklyn, New York City ) is a native of the United States, Canadian jazz singer.

Life and work

Lee grew up in New York, where she already occurred during their time in high school as a singer. She began her career as a dancer, she also played in several tour groups drums and tenor saxophone before moving to Montreal in 1970. Then she focused on jazz singing and presented a series of albums on the Canadian label Justin Time Records ago. On their first album Deep Song ( 1989) Milt Hinton and Oliver Jones were involved, on their second album Jazz on Broadway Red Mitchell was a sideman. She appeared in the play Lady Day; Billie Holiday and Dinah Washington have they influenced. She is also the author of several children's books ( Nana, What do you say? ). She lives in Québec.

Prizes and awards

Ranee Lee has won several awards, including the Order of Canada (2006 ) and the Dora Mavor Moore Award; In 2010 she received the Juno Award for her album Ranee Lee Lives Upstairs.
