Ranulf le Meschin, 3rd Earl of Chester

Ranulph le Meschin (* 1074, † January 1129 ) was Earl of Chester in Cheshire and the Viscount of Avranches in Normandy. He was the son of Ranulph, Viscount of Bayeux, and Marguerite, daughter of Richard le Goz, Viscount of Avranches.

Life

After the Norman conquest of England and the subsequent subjugation of the North Ranulph le Meschin received large estates, including the feud Appleby and the city of Carlisle. He succeeded his cousin Richard d' Avranches in 1121 as Earl of Chester and Viscount of Avranches.

Ranulph was also by his marriage ( to 1093 ) with a woman named Lucy (* around 1079, † 1138 ), the largest landowner in Lindsey. Lucy, their relationship and marriages are controversial, perhaps, was the daughter of Turold, Sheriff of Lincoln, but more likely the maternal granddaughter of William Malet, Lord of Graville (House Malet ).
