Raoul Koczalski

Armand Georg Raoul of Koczalski ( born January 3, 1885 in Warsaw, † November 24, 1948 in Poznan; pseudonym Jerzy Amando ) was a Polish pianist and composer.

Life

He was as a child student of Ludwig Marek and Karol Mikuli at the conservatory in Lemberg ( Lviv ). Even as a seven year old, he traveled in Germany, Austria, France, England and Scandinavia, where the prodigy astonished his audience by his unusual skill. After four years of travel, he retired from public life to devote himself to his further education. Once finished, he continued his international career. He was especially appreciated as an interpreter of the works of Chopin and was at times as the best Chopin player.

As a composer, he wrote many works for piano, including 24 Preludes and 3 are suites and four operas, two of which premiered.
