Raphaël Confiant

Raphaël Confiant ( born January 25, 1951 in Le Lorrain, Martinique ) is a Creole writer.

Life

Raphaël Confiant completed his schooling in Fort-de -France and then studied English and political science at the Institut d' études politiques ( University of Aix en Provence). Already during his studies he was a strong advocate of the French Creole.

From 1979, he was entrusted with a teaching position at the Université des Antilles et de la Guyane. 1981 Confiant was instrumental in the founding of the Creole weekly " Antilla " in which he has since published regularly. At this time Confiant debuted as a writer. His first works he published in Creole language and for printing costs out of pocket, as the local publishers not to publish an unknown author otherwise were ready. After initial successes Confiant could then 1988 to present with Eau de Café his first novel in French.

As " chabin " which people "black" descent and fair skin are referred to in Creole, Confiant determines its identity as a Creole. Together with the writers Jean Bernabé and Patrick Chamoiseau initiated Confiant the Créolité; a literary counter-movement or a Aimé Césaire's negritude counterpoint to. Prelude to 1989 was their " Eloge de la créolité ".

Politically, Confiant engaged in the local party Bâtir le Pays Martinique (BPM).
