Raphael Kalinowski

Raphael Kalinowski (born Józef Kalinowski, religious name Raphael Saint Joseph, born September 1, 1835 in Vilnius, Lithuania, † November 15, 1907 in Wadowice, Poland) was a Polish Carmelite Father. He is venerated in the Roman Catholic Church as a saint.

Life

Kalinowski was the son of a professor. He entered the Imperial Russian Army, was finally officer and directed the construction of the railway line from Kursk to Kiev Odessa on. In 1863 he joined the Polish national uprising on, was arrested, tried, and sentenced to hard labor in the Siberian mines. After ten years, he returned to his home, but left them soon and went to Paris, where he worked as a tutor of Prince August Czartoryski. In 1877 he joined in Graz with the Discalced Carmelites and received the religious name " Raphael of St. Joseph ." Kalinowski studied theology, was ordained a priest and then worked in Poland as vicar provincial of his order ( he is regarded as the restorer of the Order in Poland) and as a missionary in Russia. Pope John Paul II spoke to him in 1983 in Krakow blessed holy and 1991.
