Rapid City is the second largest city in the U.S. state of South Dakota with about 68,000 inhabitants. The 976 mile-high city is the county seat of Pennington County.

At the Canyon Lake dam burst in 1972, the city was heavily damaged, 238 people lost their lives.

Tourism & the Economy

In the center of Rapid City you can visit the bronze statues of all previous 43 U.S. presidents in life size. These are available at the intersections along Main Street and Saint Joseph Street ( between the 4th and 9th Street ). Information on the tour one can get " President's Information Center " at the Main Street / corner of 7th Street in. On the edge of town is a replica of the stave church Borgund. Other attractions include a historic building the fire, dinosaur figures that are placed on a hill, and a piece of the Berlin Wall. The most important economic factor for the city is tourism. Near the town is Mount Rushmore, one of the most famous monuments of the United States, which is visited each year by about two million people. About 20 kilometers east of the city lies the Ellsworth Air Force Base, another major employer in the economically underdeveloped region. There is also the South Dakota Air and Space Museum.

Furthermore, currently being built 15 km south of Mount Rushmore, the Crazy Horse Memorial.

Sports

In the town the Rapid City Rush hockey team is located. She plays since the 2008/ 09 season in the Central Hockey League and bear its games at Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.

Education

Rapid City is the seat of South Dakota was founded in 1885 School of Mines and Technology, a technical college specializing in business. Mascot of the college is the so-called hard rockers.

The city has 16 Elementary Schools, five Middle Schools, and three high schools: Stevens and Central High School and the RCAS Academy.
