Etymology

On the origin of the family name, there are several explanations. Almost all explanations agree that the family emigrated to Italy in the 14th century and has spread from there to Western and Eastern Europe. Also, many researchers agree that the origins of the family are in Ashkenazim with the name Raffa, who were expelled because Capistrano 1420-1422 by Giovanni from Regensburg to Mainz.

At the end of the 16th century, the name Ha - Kohen Rabe has prevailed. Part of the Polish branch has changed the family name to Wrona (Polish Rabe ). The other version by the name Wrona has its origins in the Italian city of Verona. The ambiguity is because in Hebrew the words Wrona and Verona as it goes ( Hebrew: ורונה ).

In the mid-17th century, the family Rapa - port lived in Poland and Latvia. Over time, modifications of the family name took place: Rapiport, Rapoport, Rappeport and Rappert emerged. Primarily, the family of Cracow and Lemberg has spread; in 1584 a famous Talmudist Abraham Rapa Port was (also called Schrenzel ) born.
