Province

Ratchaburi (or Ratburi, Thai: ราชบุรี, pronounced: [ râ ː tt͡ɕ ʰ áʔbùʔri ː ], colloquially [ râ ː tbùʔri ː ], translated "King City " ) is the capital of the district ( Amphoe ) Mueang Ratchaburi and the province of Ratchaburi. The Ratchaburi province is located in the central region of Thailand.

Geography

Ratchaburi is one of the oldest cities in Thailand, it is located about 80 kilometers west of Bangkok on the lower reaches of the Mae Klong.

The main water resource of the district is the River Mae Klong.

History

Once the city was right on the coast of the Gulf of Thailand, due to the sedimentation of the Mae Klong pushed this over the course of time by about 30 km to the south. Ratchaburi is nevertheless remained an important trading center. Excavations have shown that has been settled in the city as early as the Bronze Age, the city itself has been known for some of the era. King Ramkhamhaeng snatched Ratchaburi Khmer and divided the city in the Kingdom of Sukhothai one. Later it was an important trade center in the Kingdom of Ayutthaya ( first time under Ramathibodi I. ). 1768 threw King Taksin the Burmese who recently had destroyed Ayutthaya, Ratchaburi out and made the city a part of the Kingdom of Siam.

Attractions

  • Khao Wang - palace on a 44 m high hill west of the city, built at the behest of King Chulalongkorn ( Rama V ), which should, however, have visited him only once in 1877.
  • Wat Mahathat - Temple of the Lopburi period, some dating from the 9th - 10th Century.
