Rathaus Schöneberg (Berlin U-Bahn)

The underground station Rathaus Schöneberg town hall of the same name is a station of Berlin subway line 4, which results from Nollendorf to Innsbruck place. The station was built in 1908-1910 by the then independent town of Schöneberg and opened on October 1, 1910 under the name City Park. The architect was Johann Emil Schaudt.

History and Structure

The station was built in a hollow, in which also the Stadtpark Schoeneberg was created at the same time. The former level of construction technology allowed a tunneling under the moist subsoil not. Therefore, we used the scraps left over from building the Schöneberg underground excavation to the landfill, and the station itself was designed as a bridge-like above-ground structure, which is based on three 70 -meter long, reaching to the load-bearing ground concrete pillars. The metro station is provided with windows to both sides, through which one can look into the park. This construction - a mixture of underground and open station - is extremely rare (for this see also the comparatively Spittelmarkt underground station and the Nuremberg Opera metro station house). About or at the station, a road was created, which today serves as a bicycle lane with wide pedestrian area (part of the signposted Wannsee Route RR1 ).

The station was lined with blue-green tiles, the interior - with the use of the signs typography - a design tasks, which was closely modeled on the then-popular Art Nouveau style.

Further development

During World War II, the station was already damaged in 1940, 1945, totally destroyed, until 1951 but was rebuilt in its old form again. The blue tiles, so still there were, besides, painted beige. Totally remodeled at that time was the lobby of the station. 1973 also have been detected remaining additions were demolished to the station and replaced by a Stahlumwehrung with roof.

When the line was set up in 1981 U4 as a test track for the fully automatic mode (without check-in staff on the platform ), equipped the BVG the station with cameras for video surveillance from the control center Nollendorfplatz. Because of the unfavorable recording technology lighting conditions in 1983 were mounted on the western windows of the train shed consistently blinds. These are no longer in use, the view from the train is back on both sides possible.

In 2002, the entire station was renovated. Was built in the entrance area. At the southern end of the platform a small staircase was created as an additional emergency exit. The train station is a listed building.
