Rathaus (Vienna U-Bahn)

The underground station Rathaus on the U2 line is located on the border between the 1st and the 8th district of Vienna. It is located directly under the Landesgerichtsstraße between Josefstädterstraße and the Friedrich- Schmidt-Platz and has two side platforms and outputs on both sides of the Landesgerichtsstraße. At the output Josefstädterstraße is possible to switch to the tram line 2 in the direction Ottakringerstraße / Erdbrustgasse or Friedrich- Engels-Platz. Barrier-free access via elevator is currently only possible via the output Friedrich- Schmidt-Platz.

It is named after the Vienna City Hall nearby. Other prominent points in the vicinity of the station are the Parliament, the complex of buildings of the Vienna Regional Court, the former Military Geographical Institute and the cabaret venue Niedermair.

The station was opened as Unterpflaster tram on October 8, 1966 under the name Friedrich- Schmidt-Platz. On 6 August 1980 reopening took place as U2 station with the current name City Hall. In the years 2000 to 2002, the reconstruction of the platforms for operation with long trains made ​​in regard to the extension of the U2 towards the stadium.
