Rauf DenktaÅŸ

Rauf Raif Denktash ( in German media usually Denktash, in English-language media Denktash, born January 27, 1924 in Paphos, British Overseas Territories, † January 13, 2012 in Nicosia ) was a Turkish Cypriot politicians and 1976-2005 President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

Life

Denktash was formed in London in Lincoln 's Inn to Barrister. He belonged since the 1950s, the political leadership of the Turkish Cypriot population. Between 1964 and 1968 he was prevented by the Greek -dominated political leadership of the Independent since 1960, Cyprus from entering the island. After the de facto partition of the island in 1974 he called 1975 the "Turkish State of Cyprus " and was from 1976 to 2005 president-elect in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, which received no international recognition. In the efforts to reunify the island, which had been strengthened ahead of the EU - accession of the Republic of Cyprus, Denktash was regarded as a brakeman, who insisted on a large degree of autonomy of Northern Cyprus. He had made his continuance in office of the outcome of the referendum on the UN plan ( the Annan Plan) depending on 24 April 2004. After this plan of the Turkish population had been accepted in the northern part of Cyprus with a large majority, he explained, not to stand in the presidential elections in April 2005. In May 2011, he suffered a stroke. He was treated at the Hospital of the University of the Middle East north of Nicosia, then died but in mid-January with 87 years of multi -organ failure.

His son Serdar is also politically active.
