Raytheon

Raytheon Company is an American defense and electronics company headquartered in Waltham, Massachusetts. The company merged in 1997 with Hughes Aircraft, which was named after its founder Howard Hughes.

History

Foundation

Laurence K. Marshall and Vannevar Bush, two former roommates at college, founded in 1922 together with the scientist Charles G. Smith today Raytheon Company as the American Appliance Company in Cambridge, MA.

First commercial successes

The first commercial success was a gas-filled rectifier, which made ​​it possible radio devices with AC power from the wall outlet to operate, instead of the time expensive and heavy batteries. It was sold under the brand name Raytheon, composed of "ray " (English for "Ray ") and " theon " (Greek for " the gods " or "divine" ).
